50 trophies for Chipping Sodbury Tang Soo Do martial arts club
MEMBERS of Chipping Sodbury’s Tang Soo Do club brought home 50 trophies after participating at the sport’s national championships in Nottingham.
The 24 winners were at all age groups and levels, in disciplines varying from individual fighting to team events.
Instructor Paul Townsley said: “It was a very proud day for the local club to stand so strong on the national stage and Chipping Sodbury Tang Soo Do is firmly on the martial arts map.”
The club has been running for nearly 15 years. Tang Soo Do itself is a traditional Korean martial art which has been practised for over 1,000 years. The Chipping Sodbury club is part of the World Tang Soo Do Association, which ran the championships. It is open to everyone regardless of age, background or fitness, and has recently started a new class for people with physical disabilities and mental health issues. The youngest pupil is currently five and the oldest is 50.
Paul said: “There is a really good club atmosphere. As an instructor I ask my students to leave their ego at the door along with their shoes, as we train barefoot. I have to say that you could not meet a nicer bunch of people, always willing to help and work with each other, inside and outside the training hall.”
The club meets on Tuesdays and Thursdays at Chipping Sodbury School Sports Centre, classes are 7-8pm for children, and 8-9.30pm for adults. There are also free taster sessions.
