A hectic summer ahead for Chipping Sodbury’s cricketers

CHIPPING Sodbury Cricket Club are preparing for another season with plenty at stake for all five Saturday senior sides.


CHIPPING Sodbury Cricket Club are preparing for another season with plenty at stake for all five Saturday senior sides.
The local league structure will undergo a dramatic overhaul at the end of the season placing the onus firmly on each team to finish as high as they possibly can in their division when the new league set-up comes into force.
Sodbury’s first XI, captained once again by opening batsman Bryan Jater, open their campaign in the Gloucester division of the West of England Premier League (WEPL) with a trip to Woodmancote. Their first home game against newly promoted Cheltenham Civil Service is on May 9.
The second XI continue to be led by experienced batsman Jerry Swatton. They play in the WEPL’S Glos&Wilts 2nd XI division, and get underway with a home clash against Biddestone on May 2.
Sodbury 3rd’s, who play in Division Three of the Bristol & District League, will be once again be skippered by Chris Young and kick off with a derby trip to Pucklechurch.
Richard Bennett is the new captain of Sodbury 4th’s who this year compete in Division Nine. Their first game is at home to Bristol Lions on May 2.
And finally Sodbury 5th’s find themselves in Division Ten under the watchful eye of veteran Richard Deane. Their first opponents on May 2 are Coalpit Heath, at Tormarton CC.
Sodbury, a community-based club sponsored by Power Systems, have a busy Sunday schedule. Under new captain Tom Febry they have re-entered the Village League.
Their Division Three campaign is launched with home friendlies against Westbury (May 3) and Portishead Pirates (May 10) before a league date against Winterbourne (May 17).
A feature of the summer and expected to attract big crowds to the Ridings is the ECB’s new NatWest U19 Club T20. The Sodbury Slayers, as they will be known, have joined the Gloucestershire competition, and face home dates against Bristol West Indians (July 31) and Keynsham (August 7)
Players of all ages and abilities are welcome at the squad.
