Alfie is racing to success
HE won’t be road legal for another four years but Alfie Gendall already has a taste for the adrenaline of motor racing.
The 13 year old from Yate will be taking part in this year’s Jascar Super Cup Series and is on the lookout for sponsors to help him compete. Alfie has been racing since he was 11, when he was given a voucher for Christmas to use at Castle Combe racing circuit. This year he has his own car to drive in the series, which is for eight to 16-year-olds. Jascar cars are half the scale of NASCAR cars, which compete in America’s most popular motorsport.
Alfie said: “The thing I love about racing is the excitement of it and, as a driver, the adrenaline of being in an intense race from start to finish. Every race is different and provides me with new skills and improves technique – it’s an added bonus when you come out with a good result.”
Practising is something Alfie can do from the comfort of his own home, on a PC via sim racing using a steering wheel and pedals. He’s also had a couple of test days at the Birmingham Wheels Raceway. This is an oval track and there are only a few others around the country, in Kent, Norfolk and Scotland.
The aim of the Jascar Super Cup series it to provide an inexpensive entry level racing experience for young drivers who want a taste of the real thing.
Alfie’s dad Jeff said: “We are both happy and excited for Alfie for this coming season. This is a new challenge him with lots to learn for both him and ourselves.
“We try and travel as a family whenever possible to support Alfie's racing. This can be tricky at times, as our daughter Ellie competes in majorette competitions as part of Yate Star Twirlers and has represented England for the past five years at the European Championships.”
For now, Alfie’s aim is modest: to enjoy himself and learn from every race.
He said: “As Jascar is a completely new series for me this season we have a lot to learn about the car and racing in this series. It will be amazing to be battling for victories, but I guess we will have to see – my first event of the season is in Scotland in August.”
Alfie is a member of the Greenpower Rotary Racer racing team at Chipping Sodbury Secondary School. They design, build and race electric cars and hope to compete at the International Final at Silverstone in October.
Motorsport is expensive and Alfie is looking for support to help transport his car around the country. Sponsors get their logo and details displayed on the vehicle. Any local businesses interested in becoming sponsors should email firstname.lastname@example.org.
