A LANDMARK was reached when Michael Brimble moved to Chipping Sodbury from Iron Acton as part of a major housing improvement scheme.
Mr Brimble, 76, became the 50th resident of Merlin Housing Society to move house during the scheme that will eventually see the redevelopment of 450 homes by the Chipping Sodbury-based association.
They are being replaced with up to 750 modern, energy efficient premises - but only once the people living in the old ones have a new roof over their heads.
Mr Brimble had lived in one of four Merlin bungalows in Nibley Lane for nearly ten years, was settled in the village and took great pride in his garden.
But as the bungalows were in a poor condition, they were highlighted for redevelopment.
Mr Brimble admitted he was anxious when he was first told about the move but project housing officer Sarah Durbin found a bungalow in Chipping Sodbury for him.
Mr Brimble said: “When I walked in the door it was like a mirror image of my old bungalow, except 30 years younger.
“I really liked it and Sarah told me not to worry about anything, saying they’d even move my shed - and sure enough they did.
“I had been very happy in my old home so when Merlin wanted to re-house me, it was a shock. I’d dreaded having to live on the third floor of a block of flats.
“But I went back to my old property the day after I moved and I couldn’t believe it. As soon as I walked in the front door I was hit by this strong, damp, musty smell.
“I had just accepted the damp as one of those things but after one day away, I realised how bad it had been. It’s been a really good move for me and I am very satisfied with my new home.”
Sarah said: “Moving a customer does require a lot of organisation and working together across different parts of the business to ensure all their needs are met.”
Merlin recently won planning permission for the redevelopment of the Iron Acton properties. Meanwhile building work on its first site in Coalpit Heath is due to start in June.
