Blind sailor prepares for world championships
A Yate man, who won a silver medal at the Blind Sailing World Championships in 2017, is preparing for the 2019 championships in Canada.
Mark Austen said: ‘Although I have qualified as a member of the GB Blind Sailing Team, I do not receive any funding for Training in the U.K. or even when racing in National and International Blind Sailing events. My personal expenses to attend all the training needed during this year is £3,900.’
If selected for next Year’s World Championships in Canada, Mark will have to raise a further £2,500 to be able to participate.
A road accident left Mark with less than 20% sight in one eye. As a consequence he is unable to work and raises much of the money he needs to compete by playing saxophone at private functions, busking and some public speaking.
