Challenging cancer, one run at a time
A CHIPPING Sodbury woman who experienced her own breast cancer scare has taken up the challenge of running a total of 100km in a month to raise funds for the charity Breast Cancer Now.
Marie-Louise Coster, who runs local beauty salon ‘All About Mi’, was referred to the breast care centre at Southmead Hospital in 2019 for tests.
She was given the all clear, but the experience made an impact.
Marie-Louise said: “Sitting in that waiting room watching people coming in and out and the joy or utter devastation on the faces of them and their loved ones was a reminder, if one was needed, of the fragility of life and the reality of this awful disease.”
The following year her nan died of breast cancer, and this loss, plus the experiences of clients who have fought the disease, committed her to supporting breast cancer charities.
Marie-Louise started running 4km for 6 days a week, with one day of rest, in March and aimed to reach her target by the end of the month.
She said her knees were "struggling", adding: "I assumed that if I could walk, running wouldn’t be that hard, but it is!”
