Chipping Sodbury Big Lunch goes country and western
Noon until 6pm
Chipping Sodbury High Street
THIS year’s Chipping Sodbury Big Lunch will be a street party with a Texan theme, with line dancing, riding rodeo and a Dolly Parton tribute act.
There will be a whole afternoon off free family activities at the bring-a-picnic event on Sunday June 2, from noon to 6pm, including a tin can alley shoot-out, children’s fancy dress competition and free face painting, with the rodeo rides on an inflatable bucking bronco.
Big Lunch chairperson Alexandra Womack said: “What could be more fun? Hay bales will line our beautiful High Street and we have a packed line-up of amazing entertainment this year.
“All you need to do is pack a picnic and come along for a day of free fun.”
Blazing Saddles hoedown dance group will lead the line dancing, and top tribute artist Diamond Dolly will perform Dolly Parton’s greatest hits.
There’ll also be performance from Stapleton School of Dancing and singing from the West Country Communion band.
The entertainment stage will be decorated specially in the style of the American West. Local businesses are taking part, with the Little Cheese Shop selling quesadillas and flatbread pizzas, Jon Howell the butcher running a hog roast, and the Squire Inn serving hot foot outside their premises on Broad Street.
The big lunch in Chipping Sodbury is part of the national Big Lunch initiative to tackle loneliness and encourage community spirit. All it requires is for people to have lunch together on the first Sunday in June. In first started in the town 7 years ago for the Diamond Jubilee, organised by the town council.
In 2003 the event it was taken on by Alexandra Womack and Sarah Todd and it is now run independently with its own committee of volunteers.
There is also a Christmas Big Lunch for elderly and vulnerable people and fundraising events throughout the year. The committee recently won a group award in the 2019 Chairs’ Community Awards run by South Gloucestershire Council.
Entertainment at the event is free as it is funded through grants and fundraising.
