Chipping Sodbury rugby round-up: November 2019

CHIPPING Sodbury have enjoyed two convincing wins to push them up to fourth in the Tribute Western Counties League.

Sodbury made the most of home advantage in both games, beating Winscombe 26-8 at The Ridings, before an even more emphatic 51-18 win over relegation threatened Clevedon.

The two wins means that Sodbury have now won 5 or their last six games. Their only reverse in that run came at the hands of a Cheltenham side that are one three clubs just a point behind Chipping Sodbury in a very tight table.

Meanwhile Chipping Sodbury Ladies got their cup campaign under way with a thumping win over Avonmouth.

With both teams short on numbers, the sides agreed to play 10s and uncontested scrums, the first of which led to Angela Griffith going over for Sodbury’s opening try.

Naomi Iles then scored the second after a turnover and, after Avonmouth stormed in through a gap in the defence to pull a try back, full-back Katie Summerville charged down the blind side wing for her first, and Sodbury’s third try of the match.

Fly-half Louise Romanowski scored Sodbury’s fourth after winger Lara Waxman sprinted almost the entire length of the pitch, only to be caught a few metres from the line.

Angela Griffiths scored her second to make it 31-10 at half-time.

She scored her hat-trick early in the second half, after Avonmouth pressure had brought the hosts' third try of the day.

Chipping Sodbury second row Susan Stewart scored her own try after picking a loose ball in open play but when Avonmouth scored two tries to bring the score to 43-32, Sodbury knew they had to dig deep to seal the win.

Angela Griffiths scored her fourth and fifth tries of the game, with the Avonmouth line sent into disarray following a big hit from Sodbury prop Danielle Vaughan in the line out.

Intent to add more points to the scoreboard, the visitors found the energy to keep pushing and were rewarded in the final minutes with another two tries, by Katie Summerville, whose performance earned her the coaches' player of the match award, and a sixth for players' player Angela Griffiths.
