Cricketers ready to start the season

CHIPPING Sodbury are gearing up for a hectic summer of cricket by once again running five senior Saturday teams as well as a Sunday XI and youth teams from under-11s through to under-17s.

CHIPPING Sodbury are gearing up for a hectic summer of cricket by once again running five senior Saturday teams as well as a Sunday XI and youth teams from under-11s through to under-17s.
The season-opening game pitches the men’s side away to Gloucester City Winget on April 16, and the following weekend features two Saturday games at the Ridings with the first team entertaining Sherston and Sodbury 2nd’s meeting Hambrook. The busy weekend is completed by a Sunday home fixture on April 24 against Stapleton.
Final preparations for the league campaign conclude with the first XI travelling to Frenchay for a friendly on April 30 with the 2nd’s hosting Winterbourne. The Sunday XI host the Travellers on May 1.
All senior attention will then turn to league action on May 5 when all five senior sides will play. Jamie Rendell, the former Gloucestershire spinner, is to lead the first XI in the WEPL’s Gloucestershire division with Jerry Swatton in charge of the second XI who will be competing for the first time in Division Three of the Gloucestershire County League.
The third X1, led by their new captain Steve Febry find themselves in Division Seven of the freshly expanded Bristol & District League.  Damien Frodsham will lead the fourth XI, in Division Eleven, and Richard Deane is once again bringing to bear all his experience out in the middle for Sodbury fifths, who will be playing in Division Sixteen.
The Sunday XI, under the leadership of Tom Febry are once again taking part in the Village League.
Chairman Andy Shield said: “It’s been a long winter but we’re now all looking forward to unpacking our pads and kit and playing again. We’re always looking to attract new members of all ages and abilities, men and women, girls and boys; if you want to play cricket then we can find a game for you here. We have some of the best facilities in the Bristol and South Gloucestershire area and a cracking social side.”
