Cup success for Yate

Yate Town have reached the first qualifying round of the FA Trophy following a replay against Fleet Town.

Yate Town have reached the first qualifying round of the FA Trophy following a replay against Fleet Town.

Yate travelled to Hampshire for the first tie and found themselves playing up a considerable slope in the first half. Both teams struggled to find their range until three minutes from the interval when Charlie Hitchings conceded a penalty after a foul on Owen Bennett. Patrik Ruzicka netted from the spot.

Yate gained the upper hand in the second period and deservedly equalised when Luke Bryan headed on to Lewis Leigh- Gilchrist and the Bristol Rovers loanee cut in from the left to score after his first attempt had been blocked. Neither side managed to add to the score-line in the remaining 25 minutes so the sides replayed at Lodge Road.

It was Fleet who again took the lead, a fine individual goal from the elusive Gilberto Abrila. Swirling rain freshened the pitch and Yate looked a different side after the break. They equalised ten minutes into the second half when Ben Brooks met a cross from the right with an excellent shot into the top corner.

Yate’s superior fitness began to tell and it was no surprise when they took the lead. A corner was only partially cleared and Leigh-Gilchrist rode a couple of challenges and scored with a very cool finish. Only some fine saves by the visitors keeper, Liam Beach, prevented them from adding a third. Yate saw out the match to clinch a 2-1 win boosting team morale as well as the club’s bank balance from a £3,000 win bonus.

Yate’s new found confidence was evident in their next match when they entertained Gloucestershire rivals Shortwood United gaining their first home league win of the season.

Following a relatively quiet opening to the first half with few chances created by either side Yate broke the deadlock on 39 minutes. Cameron Ebbutt picked up on a weak clearance by the visitors keeper to set up Leigh- Gilchrist. With a clear sight of goal the youngster continued his scoring run with another composed finish.

Shortwood were reduced to ten men when Adam Price was dismissed and Yate dominated the second half, increasing their lead ten minutes from time. James Difford’s inch perfect cross was headed home by the unmarked Ebbutt. Ben Brooks completed Town’s 3-0 victory just before the end when some incisive passing gave him the opportunity to score into the corner.

Earlier in the month Yate were eliminated from the League Cup by local rivals Bristol Manor Farm. Yate had taken the lead after ten minutes with a fine goal by Brad Abraham who netted with a low drive into the corner. Manor Farm equalised just before the break when Jordan Metters scored from a narrow angle. The visitors took the lead two minutes after half time when Aron Robbins scrambled the ball home and after both sides had further opportunities, Metters completed his double with a free kick over the defensive wall to give the away side a deserved 3-1 win.

Yate look forward to a very busy November, with matches midweek as well as on Saturdays, including five games at Lodge Road during the month.
