Deadline approaches for cash award bids to help South Glos communities

GROUPS and organisations could get a cash boost for their communities if they make an application by the end of this month.

GROUPS and organisations could get a cash boost for their communities if they make an application by the end of this month.

A scheme launched last year by South Gloucestershire Council involves all 70 of its councillors being allocated £3,000 to fund particular projects or work in their locality.

The Member Awarded Funding scheme replaced a previous grants system and lets councillors help community projects, town and parish councils, social enterprise groups and voluntary organisations.

One beneficiary of the new arrangement was Chipping Sodbury’s community event the Big Lunch, which received £500 at the end of last year.

Organisers spent £150 of it on a Christmas meal for the elderly, with the rest going towards the main lunch event, to be held this year on Sunday, June 4, in Broad Street.

Applications for the next round of assistance must be received by Friday, March 31, with full details on the council’s website.

Under the scheme, councillors can award all their annual funding to a single organisation or scheme or divide it among a number of groups.

They can also combine their fund with those of other councillors in order to provide greater support to a particular project.
