Double victory for Yate twins Jake and Ben Demmery

YATE boxing twins Jake and Ben Demmery enjoyed victories in their latest professional fights just before the coronavirus outbreak caused all boxing in Britain to be suspended.

Jake enjoyed a convincing points victory over Sheffield’s Karim Khan in a four-round fight (above) at Ashton Gate Stadium as part of the Sanigar Events show.

Brother Ben also won over four rounds as he outfought Weston-super-Mare’s Dan Sabastonelli on the same show on February 29.

That’s two wins out of two for both boxers, who only turned professional last year after outstanding careers as amateurs representing Downend ABC.

Ben, below, said: “I fought a good technical fight, landing good counter attacks as well as making my opponent miss with the majority of shots and I was sharp from the start to finish. I would say I got better as the rounds went on and clearly won every round.”

Jake was equally pleased with his showing against the more experienced Khan, who had won his previous fight via a 3rd-round knockout.

He came out swinging and tried to take me out from the first bell.” said Jake.

He caught me off guard and made me very wary of him, which lead to the ref giving him the first round, even though I thought it was very close.

I settled in to the fight as the rounds progressed, picking my shots and pushing the pace. As the fight came to a close I had him spent. In the closing seconds I pushed him into the corner with a big flurry and nearly had him out of there but he was saved by the bell.”

Both boxers are now looking forward to their next professional fights, although with uncertainty about when sporting events will be able to resume, they are intent on keeping fit in isolation so that they are ready.

Ben sent good wishes to all their supporters too, saying: “Our fans are definitely worth a mention as they were very noisy for both fights!”
