Election preview: Yate North ward
Three seats are up for grabs in this South Gloucestershire Council ward, so you get three votes. The eight candidates standing for election are listed in alphabetical order, with pictures and quotes added for those candidates who have supplied them.
Clare Beasley, Labour:
Lived in various addresses in North Yate, now Iron Acton. Clare works as an NHS biotechnical scientist at Swindon Hospital. She has represented Yate North Ward on Yate Town Council.
Liz Brennan, Conservative:
Born and bred in Yate, Liz first got involved in campaigning by taking up the national campaign fighting for the lifesaving drug Orkambi for children living with Cystic Fibrosis, after the diagnosis of her youngest child. Liz now lives in the Greenways Road area, with her husband and three children, who all attend schools in Yate.
John Davis, Liberal Democrat Focus Team:
John was born and bred in Yate, attended local schools and lives in Yate with his wife and new baby daughter. He works in insurance. During his eight years on Yate Town Council and four on South Gloucestershire he has focussed on finance, health and the environment issues.
Mike Drew, Liberal Democrat Focus Team:
Mike has lived in Yate for over 40 years. After a career in computing, he now volunteers full time in the community. He’s served as a governor on Brimsham Green School for over 30 years, and as a councillor for Yate for 36 years. His focus is local transport and road problems – and the problems developers are causing.
Matt Lewis, Conservative:
Having lived in Yate all his life, Matt lives on Cranleigh Court Road with his wife Jo and young family, running a local gin business in Chipping Sodbury, and is also working as part of the Horseshoe Pub team. Matt has been involved in a wide range of community campaigns.
Bob Lomas, Labour:
Lived in Cranleigh Court Road, now North Road, for 46 years in total. Retired electrical supervisor/power station team leader. Has represented Yate West (part of Yate North South Glos ward) on Yate Town Council.
Ben Nutland, Liberal Democrat Focus Team:
Ben’s in his 20s. He was born and bred in Yate, attended local schools and lives in Yate. He works at the George in Chipping Sodbury. Volunteers as a school governor and joined the town council 18 months ago. His focus is transport, roads, jobs and housing that is really affordable to local young people.
Sonia Williams, Conservative:
Sonia Williams was born in Yate and has lived in the town all her life. Sonia lives in the Halifax Road area with her husband, where she raised her two sons, who also live in Yate, and with grandchildren attending Yate primary and secondary schools. Has worked alongside Local MP Luke Hall on local issues.
