FA Trophy run is a welcome distraction for Yate Town

YATE Town have produced some of their best performances of the season so far in FA Trophy.

A 6-3 win in the second qualifying round over Southern League Division One South side AFC Totton followed a win on penalties over league rivals Tiverton Town in a first qualifying round replay.

Tiverton are flying high Southern Southern League Premier Division South, sitting second as the Voice went to press, while Yate's unpredictable form has left them just one place and one point above the relegation zone.

But the Bluebells came back from two goals down, both at Lodge Road and in extra time of the away replay, to draw each match 3-3. They then won the tie 4-1 on penalties to set up a third round qualifying round tie away at Braintree Town on November 23.

There they topped their performances in the previous rounds by beating the National League South side 2-1.

Yate's reward for that performance is an even tougher challenge – another away tie in the first round proper, this time against National League side Eastleigh.

The match will be played on December 14 at 3pm.

And if the Bluebells are to get anything out of the tie, against a side in the top tier of the non-League system, they will have to do it without strikers Louis Britton and Olly Mehew.

Britton, who scored both goals in the comeback win over Braintree, has been recalled from his loan by parent club Bristol City and Mehew has opted to move down a division and join Southern League Division One South side Bristol Manor Farm.

The FA Trophy run has been a welcome respite from a difficult league campaign. After three wins in October, Yate managed to register just a solitary point from the next four games. A 2-0 reverse at fellow strugglers Dorchester Town was followed up by a narrow 1-0 defeat at home to Farnborough.

Their visit to Wimborne Town saw the Bluebells come away empty handed after a 2-0 defeat, but they managed a point in a 1-1 draw against bottom of the table Beaconsfield Town.

Yate's home league match against Chesham United has been postponed to a date to be fixed to make way for the trip to Eastleigh. The match against Swindon Supermarine, which had been scheduled for November 23, will now be played on December 28.

Upcoming home fixtures:

November 30 (3pm): Harrow Borough

December 17 (7.45pm): Weston-super-Mare

December 28 (3pm): Swindon Supermarine
