MORE than 350 people enjoyed a Christmas event at Abbotswood, Yate, with plenty of music and song accompanying the switching on of festive lights.

Organised by Abbotswood Action Group, the event was held in conjunction with a Christmas fair that took place in the St Nicholas Family Centre.

Yate Town Council supplied a Christmas tree and Santa Claus arrived to turn on the lights.

Keynsham Brass Band provided the seasonal music, while youngsters from the local Abbotswood and Wellesley primary schools’ choirs entertained the crowd with their singing.

Most of the traders in the shopping precinct also remained open throughout the event.

Caroline Jacques, the recently appointed chairwoman of Abbotswood Action Group, said there were some special moments during the night, including the delight of children as Santa arrived in a police car, a dad dressed up as Joseph and youngsters having a ball as they sang and danced.
