A DEAL has been completed to allow Yate Town Council to take ownership of the land surrounding Abbotswood Shopping Centre.
Residents and councillors had been frustrated that they could not make improvements while the land remained in private hands. That made buying it key to raising money to fund such changes.
For many years the owner could not be traced but eventually, after efforts by former Thornbury and Yate MP Steve Webb and former councillor Alan Lawrance, the owner joined talks over the purchase.
After long negotiations, Yate councillors and officers agreed a purchase price of £19,800.  The council has also allotted a sum of money in the budget for next year to maintain and improve the area.
Yate mayor Tony Davis said: “It is fantastic news that at last the council can look after this area.”
He said Mary Wright, chairwoman of the Abbotswood Action Group, its members and St Nicholas Church had worked hard to get to the current position.
He said: “They have done an amazing amount to improve the area but it was always tricky when we didn’t own the land. The town council is committed to working with the community groups and residents to ensure this is an area of which to be proud.”
Councillor Alan Monaghan, chairman of the council’s environment and planning committee,  said: “There has been a lot of work going on behind the scenes for many years but councils had not been able to spend money doing up the area because it was privately owned.
“Now we can at last crack on. We have budgeted money to start the big task of improving the area and looking after it for future generations.”
Mary Wright said: “It has taken years of effort to get to this point and the Abbotswood Action Group look forward very much to working with Yate Town Council to achieve their stated aim of making Abbotswood a pleasant place to live, to shop and to visit.”
