SODBURY town councillor Juan Nuevo is finally due to set off on the journey of a lifetime when he attempts to hitch-hike and walk the length of the country.

Juan had expected to start his marathon trip last October but had to delay it for safety reasons.

Now, after rescheduling his programme, he will begin his 1,550-mile walk - 2,500 kilometres - from his home.

His aim is to hitch-hike first to John O’Groats before setting off for Land’s End and finally returning home.

The gruelling journey will see Juan, who hopes to get into the Guinness Book of Records, leave the comfort of his home with just the clothes on his back and a medium sized backpack.

He will take a mobile phone for emergencies and a camera to film his epic journey.

Juan said: “I will be posting on Facebook regularly to document the journey. I will not be taking any cash or bank cards and will rely on the generosity of the general public to help me.

“I'll have my toiletries bag, sleeping bag and sleeping mat so I can sleep anywhere and I’m ready to challenge myself.”

Juan had planned to raise money for a narcolepsy charity, having suffered from the condition since childhood, but has now decided to raise funds for the Lions Club International Foundation.

He said: “The Lions have been giving me so much support for my initiative that I felt I should maximise my efforts to give something back.”

Sponsorship can be given by sending a cheque to the Lions Clubs International Foundation, c/o 8 Colts Green, Old Sodbury, Bristol, BS37 6LT.
