June 2018: Vet's Advice
Now that May has arrived it is time to watch out for ticks on your cat, dog, and yes, on your own legs.
Ticks are free-living ectoparasites, living in long grass, trees, and under leaves, who will attach themselves to us and our pets in order to feed on their hosts' blood. This can be from a few days to over a week.
The biggest worry is not their blood sucking, but they are transmitters for a large number of very serious diseases, including Lyme's Disease.
The Big Tick Project, a study from University of Bristol that we participated in, demonstrated clearly that the South West has a very high population of ticks, so it is important that you are aware of their potential to spread serious disease.
Check your pets; talk to your vet about prevention, and most important check yourself.
