A GRANT from a scheme aimed at encouraging the building of more homes has allowed a Yate play area to be refurbished.

The New Homes Bonus was introduced by the coalition Government to encourage local authorities to grant planning permission for houses in return for extra income.

For a set number of years after homes are built, a sum equal to the council tax payable on them is given to councils in which the houses are located.

Grants are then allocated for a variety of projects such as the refurbishment of St Mary’s Play Area by Yate Town Council.

Children and parents have welcomed the upgrade, which has seen the introduction of new features such as large and small slides set into a bank with a proper concrete path.

There is also a trampoline, a goal area, new roundabout, a small spinning climbing net, balance beams and a four-person hurricane swing.
