New team suffers teething problems

November 28 2018

The start of a new season with a newly formed, bigger club, has been a little harder than expected for the players at Badminton and Pucklechurch Ladies Hockey Club.

They began the season with the challenge of fielding two teams, something they thought would have become easier having merged, however they found themselves having to cancel some friendlies as they were unable to field anywhere near 22 players.

This proved a disappointment as they had hoped the practise would help find formations that fitted the new players working together.

With a three person coaching team formed to help the new squad settle into their respective divisions, the club came away from the first league games buzzing with some great results.

The first team, down 3-1 at half time to Westberries came back fighting to finish with a 3-3 draw. The seconds, fielding only 8 players against 14 strong WUE thirds team came away with a creditable 2-0 defeat. A spokesperson for the club said: ‘These opening results are a great show of grit and determination and showed true team spirit for our new club.’

The rollercoaster start to the season continued the following weekend when the club had to forfeit the seconds game against Bristol due to the lack of available players, however the disappointment of being unable to fulfil the fixture, was helped somewhat by the first teams performance against top side Redland, coming away with only a 4-0 defeat following a promising all round team performance.

The club were finally able to reveal their new kit several weeks in to the season after a big delay in production. Playing in their new kit, the firsts faced a tough Bristol university side. Still learning to play alongside each other and struggling with formation a little the firsts lost the game 3-0.

The first team were then able to stay and support the seconds.  The 10 player seconds didn’t disappoint and they came away with their first win 4 - 0 against a 9 player Avonmouth side.

With two afternoon games the following week the seconds played first against South Glos 2. The 7-0 loss did not reflect the game play against a great team with a new coach.

The firsts faced Clifton 4s in a late fixture and saw them finish with a 1-1 draw but still desperate to secure their first win in division 1.
