Opera society celebrates anniversary with Christmas songs
Sodbury Vale Operatic Society 50th anniversary celebrations will draw to a close with seasonal songs in Yate and Chipping Sodbury.
They will be singing Christmas songs on Saturday 8 December in Hatherall’s Yard in the morning and during the afternoon at St Mary’s Church, Yate as part of the Christmas Tree Festival.
The society started life as a twinkle in Cliff Phelps’ & Peter Mannion’s eyes back in 1967 with the first production of H.M.S Pinafore in 1968. The Society first started performing at Kind Edmund School, moved to Brimsham Green School and eventually to Chipping Sodbury Town Hall, which has been their home ever since.
They stopped performing G & S Operetta’s in 1974 and changed their name to Sodbury Vale Musical Comedy Club. 84 shows later they are gearing up ready to start rehearsals for Sister Act for their Spring 2019 production.
The group celebrated their birthday in September with a Masquerade Ball where they welcomed back some of their previous members.
Along with two musical productions staged at the Town Hall SVMCC also take part in the Sodbury Festival and Victorian Day.
