Past and present photographs combined for latest Chipping Sodbury calendar

PICTURES old and new have been included in the annual town calendar published by Chipping Sodbury Chamber of Commerce.
The 2017 version continues the Then and Now theme adopted for this year’s calendar and features the work of Murray Dowding and Rich McDonough.
Dowding, who was born in 1881, was the seventh child of ironmonger Marcus Dowding of Broad Street.
After starting in photography with portrait work, using a half plate camera, he then recognised the demand for street and rural scenes, especially for the postcard market and the recording of special events.
By 1910 he was advertising that he always had 350 local views in stock and today his postcards are collectable, giving an insight into life in the early 20th century.
Mr McDonough, a member of the chamber who runs his own photographic business, said: “We are very grateful to local historian Jim Elsworth for adding a fascinating commentary to each page. The historical detail and quality of Murray’s photographs are amazing.”
Money raised from sales of the calendar and local sponsorship will help the chamber organise events and plan schemes that bring more people to the town and encourage new businesses.
The calendars cost £6.50, or £12 for two, and are on sale in the town’s tourist information centre and at the Cotswold Vintner Post Office.
