PEOPLE in South Gloucestershire could get a second crematorium under plans being drawn up for a site on the outskirts of Thornbury.
The scheme is still at the development stage but is proposed for land behind the cemetery in Alveston.
Seating for up to 400 in a ceremonial hall is included in the scheme, which has been prepared by architects Lewis Foster Lewis for Thornbury Crematorium Ltd.
Currently, South Gloucestershire’s only crematorium is at Westerleigh, where operators last year won consent to build a second chapel and bereavement hospitality suite to cope with an increasing number of services. In 2013 it accommodated 2,278 cremations.
Other crematoria are at Canford in Westbury-on-Trym, South Bristol and Gloucester.
A community event has been organised for Thursday, August 6, to give people the chance to find out more about the plans from the professional team behind the scheme.
It will be held from 4pm-7.30pm in the Jubilee Hall, Greenhill, Alveston, and comments received will be used to develop the plan further. People can also find out more from a website www.thornbury-crematorium.co.uk running from August 3.
Land for the crematorium is off Alveston Hill and proposals include a tree-lined entrance, parking, gardens of rest and a refreshment area.
Russell Lewis, of Lewis Foster Lewis, said: “Our vision is to create a place where local people can hold cremation services in a beautiful environment, looking out across a landscape that is familiar to them.
“The columbarium, wild cemetery and gardens of rest will create a light, safe and welcoming place for families and friends to visit and to return whenever they choose, to sit with their thoughts and memories.”
