Some 30 local people helped with the clear-up, which included litter picking, pulling up weeds and cleaning gulleys. Garage doors and benches were also painted during the event, grass was cut and fl ower baskets placed outside a number of shops. The day was organised by Caroline Jacques of the Jacob’s Well community group and also involved members of the Abbotswood Action Group (AAG), police sergeant Andy Hucker and PC Angharad Baynham, Yate’s neighbourhood beat manager. A number of young people turned out to help and children’s activities arranged. Mary Wright, chairwoman of AAG, said: “The weather this time was on our side as it was a gloriously sunny day. “Everyone worked extremely hard to carry out everything we had intended to achieve, from the people providing much appreciated refreshments to those doing the heavier work. “AAG is very grateful to all those who helped in any way and for the equipment provided by South Gloucestershire Council. “We hope to take forward all this enhancement of the area together with Yate Town Council, which is in the process of purchasing the area.” The council recently reached an agreement to buy some space at Abbotswood, such as paved and grassed areas in front of the shops and some pieces of land behind them, which will make it easier to carry out improvements.
