YATE’S retiring mayor Wully Perks received an unexpected award to recognise his service to the community.
Councillor Perks was presented with the award by Tom Frost, who has just completed a year as high sheriff of Gloucestershire and is now a deputy to Dame Janet Trotter, the county’s lord lieutenant. Mr Frost and his wife, Carolyn, surprised Mr Perks and his wife, Mary, at the town council’s Poole Court offi ces by giving the award “in recognition of great and valuable services to the community”. Mr Perks said: “I was very moved and humbled to receive the award. It has been a great privilege over the last year to welcome the high sheriff and his wife to Yate on several occasions and show them what a wonderful town and community we have in Yate.”
Councillor Tony Davis has taken over as mayor, with Councillor John Ford his deputy.
