Sodbury Tennis club is celebrating success in the Avon Summer League with six men’s and five ladies teams competing in the popular competition. Teams played 10 league fixtures in a season that runs from early May through to mid-July with 10 points up for grabs each week. Many of men’s and women’s sides have been enjoying table topping runs, but there have been relegation woes too for the top men.
Reflecting the surge in female membership, Sodbury entered five ladies teams for the first time.
The ladies first team managed to establish themselves as strong contenders in division 2. The second, third and fifth teams each managed to top their respective divisions guaranteeing promotions to higher divisions next season. The fourth team also performed strongly finishing a close second in their division after losing a hard-fought final night play-off against David Lloyd Westbury IV.
There were mixed fortunes for the men's teams with the third and fifths securing promotion, the thirds topping their table with a week to spare. The fourth and sixth teams narrowly missed out on promotion with the sixth team losing out in a final head to head match with Camvale II.
It was a tough season for the men's first team who couldn’t quite survive the exceptionally high standard of play that they encountered most weeks. The seconds fought hard to save themselves but disappointingly are also facing relegation.
Club spokesperson Annie Griffin said, “What was particularly pleasing for the club was to see some truly promising juniors stepping up to play as well as some new adult members, alongside our many long standing and loyal club members. While we mourn the end of yet another summer season there is still plenty of competitive tennis for us to look forward to in the late summer mixed and veterans’ leagues.”
