YATE’S popular community music festival has been given a new name as it celebrates a landmark anniversary.
The event, to be held in Kingsgate Park, is now called Yate Rocks! and organisers hope it will bring in crowds of people to match last year’s record of 6,500 visitors.
It is ten years since the first festival was staged, becoming an instant hit in the town and surrounding area.
This year it will run over the weekend of June 20 and 21, with tribute band the Mangledwurzels headlining the Saturday programme.
A series of local bands will also feature during the day, including Limited Edition, Skeeter, Goodnight Lois, Uncle Buck, Hitshot, Tundra and Progress is Made.
They will be supported by dance groups such as Stagecoach, Glitterbugs, Pure Dance, Redds Dance Group and Street Cred.
Other entertainment ranges from football games, sideshows and children’s fun rides to giant inflatables, gymnastics demonstrations and cheerleaders.
Locally produced arts and crafts will be on display and a beer tent will be run by Wickwar Brewing Company. Families will also have the chance to get close to a fire engine from the local station.
Events on Saturday will run from midday to 8pm, with Sunday’s schedule opening with a Praise in the Park event, when local churches will provide an outdoor service from 10.30am to noon.
It will be followed by an afternoon picnic from 2pm, with music provided by the Westerly Showband and the Got2Sing choirs.
Yate councillor John Ford, chairman of the events committee, said: “We are delighted that the music festival has reached its tenth anniversary.
“What started as a small community music event has evolved into a much loved and well supported annual gathering of the community.
“We very much hope the weather will be kind to us again this year so that we can celebrate in style within the halcyon and beautiful surroundings of Kingsgate Park.”
