DRIVERS will be banned from performing U-turns on a section of the eastbound carriageway of Rodford Way, Yate, in a scheme to improve safety.

The restriction is proposed to extend from the Abbotswood junction to the Scott Way/Heron Way roundabout.

Motorists will have to continue to the roundabout and return on the westbound side of the road in order to get to their destination.

The proposal was put forward as a result of ten injury accidents happening along Rodford Way since 2011 - seven of them involving bike riders.

South Gloucestershire Council said the majority resulted from drivers turning right across the path of those going straight on.

It also said there were frequent U-turns at the Abbotswood junction, predominantly performed by drivers approaching from the Westerleigh direction in order to reach Kelston Close and the schools located there.

The scheme has been put out for consultation and anyone wishing to comment can do so via the council’s website up to December 14.
