The weather can usually be relied on to disrupt the football fixture schedule over Christmas and this year has been no exception for St Nicholas U9s boys team.
Having played just 4 games since October, their first game of 2016 was a quick reminder that being indoors on a Sunday morning is not such a bad place to be.
On a very cold and wintry day in January on the Ridings Playing Fields, St Nicks did everything they could to keep warm, including pinching the managers hat and gloves. Their 2016 campaign began with an inspired start under the firm leadership of Adam in defence, accompanied by Josh who initiated the attacking moves. In midfield “Jack the Russell” was winning everything in the centre and laying the ball to the wide players Callum and Jacob. Max used his lightening pace in attack and there was some good competition with the Ashton defence.
The home sides goalie Ted was alert to anything that came his way and both substitutes integrated well with Brandon in defence and Jake using his pace in attack. A very good first game back with Man of Match honours being shared between Jack Clark and Josh Turnbull.
Having spent a period on the side-line watching their friends in action the second team took to the pitch to show what they could do. They began with fast flowing attacking football and Akira showed real composure to get his name on the score sheet.
The defence marshalled by Harry and Ben did an outstanding job with Jordan, Dakota and Harry F bossing the midfield. It was a great all round display, and Jamie and George were also able to enjoy the game with the odd goal as a bonus. The Man of Match award went to Akira Bees.
St Nicholas U9s are always after new recruits.
