Westerleigh Road bridge to close for eight weeks for 'essential' repairs
A BRIDGE carrying traffic on journeys between Yate and Emersons Green will be closed for eight weeks while repair work is carried out to the concrete structure.
The Westerleigh Road bridge over the M4 is used by motorists travelling between the Avon Ring Road and Bristol Science Park on one side and Westerleigh, Yate and the A46, near the motorway junction at Tormarton, on the other.
Highways England, which is organising the work, says it will include “concrete repairs, re-waterproofing, resurfacing, joint replacement and repairs and painting of the parapet”.
A spokesperson said the work was due to start on July 6 and finish on August 29 and the road over the bridge (circled below) would be completely closed to motorists, cyclists and pedestrians for the duration.
There would be “clearly signed diversions”, and the work is likely to mean that nearby alternative routes, such as the B4465 through Shortwood and Pucklechurch, the A432 Badminton Road and the A4174 ring road likely to see an increase in traffic.
The spokesperson added: “The work will also involve occasional lane closures of the eastbound carriageway of the M4 but no full closures.”
In a letter sent to nearby residents Highways England said the repairs were “essential to extend the life of the bridge”.
The agency said it had “worked closely” with South Gloucestershire Council to find the best dates for the work and would “make every effort to ensure the impact on the local community and travelling public is kept to a minimum”.
