History will be made this month when Rosie Tregear becomes the first woman to captain a side in Chipping Sodbury’s 157 year existence. Tregear is set to lead the club’s fifth team, who play in division 15.  Club chairman Andy Shield said,  “Rosie has long been a great asset to this side with her accurate bowling and will do a terrific job.’

“We’re very proud that we offer a competitive game of cricket to players of all ages and abilities, and we also put out a Sunday team as well as run youth sides all the way through to under-17’s.  New players are always welcome at The Ridings.”

Chipping Sodbury first XI are looking forward to maintaining the progress they made last season. All-rounder Jamie Rendell will continue to lead the side that will be keen to improve on last seasons fifth place finish in the Gloucestershire division of the West of England Premier League.

Rendell said “We were only 11 points away from second place in a very competitive division and we’re certainly looking to kick on a bit this year with a maturing and improving side.”

The New Zealand all rounder Phil Lill makes a welcome return after he made a big impression last year with bat and ball and the team has high hopes for many of their younger players who now know exactly what is needed from them to perform at the first team level.

Sodbury’s opening game is away to Corse & Staunton on May 6 with the first home game of the new campaign the following weekend against Frocester.

Sodbury seconds, newly promoted to Division Two of the Gloucestershire County League, will be captained this summer by batsman Bryan Jater. They open up against Cam on May 6 and travel to Hatherley & Reddings the following weekend.

Sodbury’s three remaining senior Saturday sides all ply their trade in the Bristol & District League.

The thirds, led by experienced Steve Febry, are in Division Seven with club legend Richard Dean skippering the fourths, in Division 11.
