The late postponement of their New Years Day fixture against Larkhall Athletic due to a waterlogged pitch left Yate Town a little disappointed after they had enjoyed successive 3-1 wins over Kidlington and local rivals Mangotsfield.

Yate visited Cinderford Town for their first match in 2018 and returned from the Forest with a rare, hard earned point on a very heavy pitch that cut up badly as the match progressed.

The poor conditions resulted in a scrappy game with the home team enjoying more of the play without creating any clear-cut chances. Yate’s best opportunity came in the closing stages when Kyle Tooze failed to hit the target and it was no surprise that the match ended goal-less.

Yate travelled to North Leigh for their next encounter, another venue where points have been difficult to come by.  After a goal less first half Town gave a scintillating display after the break to register a 4-1 victory.

Bristol Rovers loanee Lewis Leigh-Gilchrist gave Yate the lead two minutes after the interval with a twenty yard shot and Ben Brooks increased the away side’s lead shortly afterwards. The home team hit back with a goal by Ryan Paddock, but in the 78th minute Leigh-Gilchrist curled another superb effort into the North Leigh net. In the closing minutes substitute Giancarlo Gabiaddini scored his first goal for the club to put the gloss on an outstanding second half performance.

Fifth placed Wimborne Town then visited Lodge Road, and Yate continued their excellent run with a 2-0 win after a very entertaining match. The first half proved an even contest, shaded by Wimborne but with neither side able to capitalise on a number of half-chances. Yate stepped up a gear and dominated the second half to extend their unbeaten run to six matches.

Kyle Tooze opened the scoring for Town five minutes after the break when he pounced on a poor defensive header and cleverly lobbed over the advancing keeper. Ten minutes later Yate increased their lead when a great run by Trey Anderson through the heart of the visitors defence ended with him squaring the ball across the goal to give the predatory Ben Brooks an easy tap in. Yate controlled the remainder of the match without adding to their two goal advantage, but their unbeaten streak put them within touching distance of the play-offs.
