Yate Academy tops the table

YATE Academy is the best secondary school in South Gloucestershire at improving pupils’ performance.

New government league tables comparing the Progress 8 measure, used to assess how much pupils haveimproved during their time at the school, placed the Sundridge Park school in the top 4% in the country for the 2017-18 academic year.

Yate Academy replaced Bradley Stoke Community School as the highest-ranking school in South Gloucestershire.

Every school in the Yate and Sodbury area was ranked in the top half of the area’s 17 secondary schools. King's Oak Academy, in Kingswood, was bottom of the progress score rankings for last year.

Yate Academy is an all-through academy, which accepts children aged three to 18 through its nursery, primary, secondary and Cotswold Edge sixth form.

It has 1,022 registered pupils. Of those, 106 were eligible to take GCSEs last year.

Pupils’ scores in eight GCSEs, including core subjects (maths, English and sciences) and their best other subjects are recorded.

These scores are compared to their performance in Key Stage 2 exams, taken at the age of 11 before they leave primary school, and used to calculate the amount of value the school is adding to a child's education.

The resulting average score after counting every GCSE candidate at the school is known as the Progress 8 measure.

In Yate Academy, 66% of pupils hit the expected target, grade 4 to 9, in English and maths. In total, 40% had strong grades of 5 or above in both subjects.

As a result, the school achieved a Progress 8 score of 0.69, the highest in South Gloucestershire.

Scores of above and below zero are better and worse than average respectively.

Yate Academy head of school Isabel Ambrose said: "I am absolutely delighted with the recent performance tables and am immensely proud of all students and staff at Yate Academy.

The staff in the school have a steely determination to ensure any child who attends Yate Academy has a better chance of success than if they attended any other school in the country.

To now be reconsidered as one of the top 4% of schools in the United Kingdom is fantastic and I want to thank all the students, staff and parents who have helped make this possible"
