Yate back to winning ways in September

October 04 2016

Yate town enjoyed a winning start to September with three wins improving on their dismal start to the season. A home match against Bridgwater Town opened the month and Yate made an excellent start with young striker Jack Ball scoring twice in the opening stages. His first goal after 7 minutes was finished with a low shot into the corner of the net as he held off several challenges. His double soon followed when he was first to react to a low cross from Josh Morgan-Williams and volleyed home from close range.

Bridgwater seldom threatened but still managed to reduce the arrears just before the break when former Yate player Syd Camper took advantage of some slack defending. An entertaining second half saw both sides create opportunities. The visitors equalised on 76 minutes when Ben Palmer scored following a corner but just three minutes later Yate regained the lead when Kyle Thomas curled a delightful free kick into the top corner.
Yate came close to extending their lead twice hitting the woodwork in the remaining 10 minutes but had to settle for a well deserved and a welcome 3-2 win.
Yate also made a bright start when they visited Wantage Town. Jack Ball gave them the lead midway through the first half. Treyvond Anderson found Josh Morgan-Williams with a fine cross field pass and his cross fell to Ball who forced over despite the efforts of a defender and the home keeper.
Apart from a period before half time, Yate generally looked the better side but they badly needed a second goal to make the game safe. Kye Thomas hit the post following a good move down the left before captain Kye Mountford swept the ball home from just outside the box on 78 minutes to give Yate an unassailable two goal advantage.
The next game of the month saw Yate come from behind to beat big-spending Salisbury at Lodge Road.  Although they trailed at half time, three goals in the second half saw them overcome the visitors.
Following and unprecedented treble last season Yate’s Youth Team are expected to face a more challenging season as the team consists almost entirely of first years at Under-18 level. Despite their inexperience, the team has made progress in the FA Youth Cup, beating New College Swindon 4-3 in the opening round before travelling to Tuffley Rovers where they trounced the home team 9-1. Sandwiched between these two excellent victories was their opening league match against Cullompton Rangers where the older Devon team won 2-0.
Bristol Rovers Youth team are also using Lodge Road for some of their home matches and have been impressed by the playing surface and facilities. They drew a very entertaining match against Bournemouth before convincingly beating Yeovil Town in their next match.
