Yate Town FC have continued their encouraging form into the New Year with wins over Larkhall Athletic and a very strong AFC Totton.
There was no room for festive hangovers when Larkhall visited Lodge Road on the 2nd of January and thanks to the hard work of ground staff the game was one of only two in the division that survived the torrential rain. As it turned out the pitch was in remarkably good condition, drawing praise from match officials and the visitors.
Watched by over 300 spectators, Yate had the better of the first half and took a deserved lead after 27 minutes when Alec Fiddes reached the by-line and pulled the ball back to Darren Edwards who showed good anticipation to slide the ball home. Yate continued to impress with both Lewis Powell and Edwards unlucky to see their efforts rebound off the crossbar.
Larkhall took advantage of Yate’s failure to extend their lead and equalised on 75 minutes. The home defence failed to clear a corner and Tyler Sibbick was on hand to score. It was end to end in the closing stages and Yate’s efforts were rewarded in the second minute of injury time when substitute George Box hammered in a loose ball to give Yate a deserved 2-1 victory.
A waterlogged pitch put paid to Yate’s next scheduled fixture against Burnham and they had to wait until the following week for league action against an in form AFC Totton. The visitors to Lodge Road were on a long unbeaten run and Yate had to be at their best to compete. The home side started as they had left off with Darren Edwards seeing his shot cleared off the line and Mike Bryant’s header well saved by Steve Mowthorpe in the visitors goal.
Yate persevered and took a well deserved lead on 25 minutes when Lewis Powell collected a through ball and showed great composure to hold off a couple of defenders before slotting the ball into the corner of the net for his first senior goal for Yate. Totton responded quickly with an equaliser against the run of play. Yate’s keeper misjudged a cross and Nat Sherborne volleyed home at the far post.
On the stroke of half time Yate regained the lead when Edwards headed home a cross from Alec Fiddes into the far corner. They increased their lead ten minutes after the interval when Powell unselfishly crossed to Edwards who headed his second goal of the match. Yate increased their advantage just five minutes later when Mike Bryant made another run into the box but was pulled down by Mowthorpe for a penalty converted by Jake Cox. Yate held the lead in relative comfort until Totton scored a late consolation goal when they were also awarded a penalty despatched by Mike Gosney. The final 4-2 score-line extended Yate’s unbeaten run to an impressive five matches.
Yate Town’s Reserve and Youth Teams were badly affected by the weather with both teams suffering a long run of postponed games before the Reserves travelled to Cheltenham Civil Service where they registered a creditable 1-1 draw. Mike Alvis gave Yate a first half lead but a second half penalty allowed Civil Service to share the points.
