Yate Town visited this seasons FA Cup surprise team Didcot Town on a very blustery December afternoon. The home team had reached the First Round proper of the FA Cup and enjoyed the benefit of an early goal courtesy of Lance Williams who headed in from a corner in just the third minute.
Yate fought back well from this early setback but had to re-organise after 28 minutes when central defender Jamie Laird suffered a nasty facial injury following an accidental clash of heads.
The resultant added time at the end of the half worked in Yate’s favour however when they found an equaliser through Tom Warren, who headed home a Jake Cox free kick.
Yate enjoyed the better of the second period and almost secured victory when Cox crashed a 25-yard shot against the base of a post. Darren Edwards follow up effort was well saved by Didcot ‘keeper Leigh Bedwell.
Despite mounting more pressure Yate were unable to find a winner and had to settle for a 1-1 draw after a very encouraging display.
The month had opened with a visit to league leaders Cinderford Town when another strong performance by Yate resulted in a narrow defeat. A 96th minute winner from Cinderford’s Ryan Shaw was scrambled home for the only goal of the match.
A very slippery pitch following persistent heavy rain had seen Yate come closest to breaking the deadlock when Lewis Powell, making his first team debut, had an excellent effort well saved by home custodian Alex Harris.
Taunton Town were next to visit Lodge Road and they included several former Yate players in their line-up. An even but goalless first half found Yate down to ten men shortly before the interval when recent signing Brad Andrews was dismissed for receiving two yellow cards, both for reckless challenges.
Despite this handicap Yate almost took the lead when Powell had his shot from a narrow angle touched onto a post.
Yate continued to compete well but fell behind when former Yate man Matt Villis scored at the far post.
Yate pushed for an equaliser but Taunton exploited their lack of defensive numbers with quick counter attacks and the visitors scored twice in the last five minutes to secure a 3-0 victory.
