A blind man from Yate has been selected for the Great Britain Blind Sailing team as they defend their world title in America.

A blind man from Yate has been selected for the Great Britain Blind Sailing team as they defend their world title in America.

Mark Austen will helm one of four yachts representing Britain at the 2017 Blind Fleet Racing Open World Sailing Championships to be held at Sheboygan on Lake Michigan.  

Mark who has trained and sailed with the GB Blind Sailing team for two years, said: “When I started sailing with British Blind Sailing in 2015 I set myself the goal of representing GB and I am so very proud to have been selected to race with the GB Team in the World Sailing Championships for Blind and Partially Sighted people.”

Mark has to find the money for training and racing. His personal expenses to attend all training during the year comes to almost  £5,000. 

Mark said: “I’ve been Fundraising by playing my Saxophone at public and private events. The Tesco Superstore in Yate and Waitrose in Chipping Sodbury have both allowed me to busk in their stores over the past two years. Yate and Chipping Sodbury Rotary Clubs, the Lions Club and Chipping Sodbury Yacht Club have supported me”.
