Yate man jailed for assaulting four-month-old baby
A YATE man has been sentenced to almost ten years in prison for causing “life-changing” serious injuries to a baby girl.
Avon and Somerset police said today that Thomas Philip Higgins had been jailed after pleading guilty to a charge of causing grievous bodily harm.
His four-month-old victim, who cannot be named, was assaulted at an address in the town on August 19 last year.
Higgins, aged 21, was sentenced to a total of nine years and nine months in prison when he appeared in court today, police said, after admitting the offence at a previous court hearing.
Afterwards Detective Chief Inspector James Riccio said: “Due to the injuries inflicted on this young victim, it was clear she’d been subjected to a serious assault and that Thomas Higgins was responsible.
“Sadly, the injuries are life-changing and she’s still very poorly, and in need of ongoing medical attention.
“Due to the weight of evidence against him, Higgins admitted assaulting the child at court and he’ll now face the consequences of his reckless actions.”
