Racketeers badminton club wish Penny a happy 70th
February 19 2019
A YATE sports club is celebrating the achievements of their coach, who is still going strong at 70.
For the last 30 years Penny Shears, above, has been coaching badminton for the young members of Yate Racketeers Junior Badminton Club. Not only that, she is still playing herself and even representing her country.
Sue Blackmore, from the club, said: “Penny is a fantastic role model for the young players; she is still going strong and very much enjoying playing herself for a local Bristol club, also representing Avon County and England, winning medals at world championships in her 60s.
“Penny has been dedicated to the development of the junior club. She has introduced so many children to the game of badminton, with many going on to play at a senior level for clubs and junior and senior county teams.
“Jess Hopton, a young England player, started her playing career at Yate Racketeers. Penny and the coaches are very proud of Jess and what she has achieved.
“The children and helpers wish Penny a very happy birthday.”
Anyone between the age of six and 18 interested in playing badminton can find out more about the club online at yateracketeers.weebly.com.
