Victory at Cirencester continues Yate Town's impressive season

Cirencester Town 1-2 Yate Town

YATE Town’s impressive season has continued with a crucial victory at Cirencester Town that included a last minute penalty save to ensure all three points.

It left Yate a point behind leaders Blackfield & Langley, as the season heads towards a close finish.

The wind played its part in the match, making conditions very difficult with few chances in the early exchanges. Nick Peare came close to opening the scoring in spectacular fashion on 22 minutes when his 30-yard half volley was tipped over by Mat Wieczorek.

It was the hosts who opened the scoring just before the half hour mark when Alan Griffin held the ball up before playing Whitehead through on goal and the striker bent the ball into the far corner.

Cirencester thought they'd made it 2-0 when Whitehead prodded in Griffin's flick on but after a lengthy discussion with his assistant, the goal was ruled out for offside.

Yate went down the other end and from a corner the ball found Sims-Burgess on the edge of the box whose shot went through everyone to score.

And they took the lead a minute into the second half, when Peare got on the end of a cross and finished from close range.

Yate could have wrapped it up with three minutes to go when Josh Ford came close from just outside the area after a corner.

Cirencester were awarded a penalty in the 90th minute after Joe Guest was adjudged to have handled in the area. Guest was sent off and Yate keeper Alexis Andre Jr was was given treatment. But the Bristol Rovers loanee turned out to be Yate's hero, as he saved Whitehead's penalty to ensure they came away with a crucial three points.

The win was a fillip for Yate, who had suffered after losing 2-1 to Larkhall Athletic. The setback for the title challengers came after a sparkling performance in a 3-0 win over Slimbridge. Nick Peare scored a stunning hat-trick on his return from suspension.

Peare was having his own goal of the season contest, with two contenders either side of the break, before earning the match ball with a header.
