THE High Sheriff of Gloucestershire learnt about aspirations for the Abbotswood area of Yate when she was given a brief tour of the town.
Lady Bathurst met Mary Wright, the chairwoman of Abbotswood Action Group, and local residents to hear of their hopes for the land surrounding Abbotswood Shopping Centre which Yate Town Council bought earlier in the year.
She also went to see Kingsgate Park, called into the recently opened Vintage Birdcage Cakery and visited the Armadillo Youth Venue and Cafe.
Local youth workers gave an insight into the work they did with young people and spoke of plans to replace the Urbie - the urban vehicle for information and education - which plays an essential part in the team’s outreach work.
Yate Town Council is currently fundraising for a new vehicle and is inviting support from businesses and organisations.
Town mayor Tony Davis said: “We were delighted to meet Lady Bathurst and show her some of the town council facilities.
“We welcomed her interest in ongoing projects, particularly in the areas of Abbotswood and the Armadillo, and work done with the young people of Yate.”
Lady Bathurst told those who had accompanied her on the tour that she hoped to return to see more of the town.
